Why Abstract Art Belongs in the Modern Office

Spend enough time in offices and you’ll notice something.

Most walls are either completely forgotten or covered with predictable prints that nobody really sees after the first week.

I think that’s a missed opportunity.

The right piece of abstract art doesn’t just fill an empty space. It changes how a room feels. It can bring energy to a reception area, create a sense of calm in a meeting room or simply stop a workspace feeling like every other office you’ve ever walked into.

That’s one of the reasons I love creating paintings for contemporary spaces. Abstract art doesn’t tell people what they’re supposed to see. Instead, it leaves room for individual interpretation. Every person brings something different to it, and in a shared workplace that’s a real strength.

When I’m working on a painting, I’m thinking about balance, movement, texture and colour long before I’m thinking about what the finished piece might represent. Those same qualities influence the atmosphere of a room.

Colour matters, but not in the simplistic way we’re often told. A painting isn’t calming simply because it’s blue, nor energetic just because it contains red. It’s the relationship between colours, marks and open space that creates the mood. Sometimes a restrained palette has more presence than something shouting from across the room.

Scale is just as important. One of the biggest mistakes I see is artwork that’s simply too small for the wall it’s hanging on. A well-proportioned painting becomes part of the architecture of a space rather than an afterthought. It gives the room a focal point without demanding all of the attention.

Lighting also plays its part. Mixed-media paintings constantly change throughout the day as natural light shifts across their surface. Layers of collage, acrylic, pastel and pencil reveal themselves differently in the morning than they do late in the afternoon. That’s one of the pleasures of living with original artwork. It never quite stands still.

For me, choosing artwork for an office isn’t about matching the company logo or finding something that picks up the colour of the office chairs. It’s about creating an environment that people actually enjoy spending time in. Whether it’s a creative studio, a reception area or a quiet workspace, the painting should support the room rather than compete with it.

A thoughtfully chosen original painting can become part of a company’s identity without ever feeling corporate. It adds character, encourages conversation and reminds us that even in places designed for work, there’s still room for creativity.

If you’re considering abstract art for your office, start by thinking less about decoration and more about atmosphere. Ask yourself how you want the space to feel. Calm? Confident? Creative? Welcoming?

The right painting won’t answer those questions for you.
