At the end of the day

Another of my big square canvases. I love painting at this size, there seems to be the right amount of room to move and play. This is a painting of Bar Beach, looking west into the sunset. I tend to go to Grebe for sunrises, and Bar Beach for sunsets. The water can take on the most amazing colour from the sky, and shingly beaches reflect the light and reveal interesting patterns as the tide recedes. A very unspoilt peaceful spot. I used cold wax to give real body to the slabs of paint depicting the light, almost like making the light a tangible object. And this was one of the first paintings where I placed the dusky pink and orange next to each other to create that energy.
