Frenchman’s Creek dusk

SOLD

Painted on Arches Huile paper, with a deep rose ground. The primed paper is revealed through scraping back into the paint, creating a luminosity.

I built on top of some previous abstract layers for this, using underlying pinks to create the reflected dusk sky in the shimmering waters of the Helford. I wanted to get this one down to capture the magical light we saw yesterday taking our boat upriver to Gweek for the winter. We had to leave our mooring approaching dusk to get the high tide. The journey was stunning, gliding through the waters with the river bank almost touching distance at time. This is the view of Frenchman's Creek from the main river. Always an atmospheric spot, you can see why Daphne du Maurier was so inspired to write here.
